    The final act o the watergate cover-up trial is about to unfold in Washington, as the jury at the trial of vie former Nixon administration officials considers its verdict.

    After instructing them for more than two hours on the law involved in the trial, Judge John Sirica yesterday (December 30) sent the mainly black and mainly female jury out with the reminder that they had "a solemn duty to perform - to see that justice prevails".

    The trial lasted fourteen weeks and was one of the longest and most complex criminal cases ever tried. During the hearings, five mon were accused of covering up and concealing facts about the watergate break-in and thereby obstructing justice.

    The five accused are former Attorney-General John Mitchell, White House advisers John Erlichman and Bob Haldeman and Nixon campaign assistants Robert Mardian and Kenneth Parkinson.

    If convicted, they face prison terms form five to twenty-five years for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and lying to the Senate Watergate committee in what the U.S. government considers was a massive effort to obstruct the investigation into the June 17, 1972 break-in at Democratic party headquarters in washington.

    During the trial, the jury has heard more than 80 witnesses and over thirty hours of subpoenaed White House tape recordings. Out their verdict should bring to an end the scandal which rocked America continuously for over two years and led to the downfall of Richard Nixon as President.
