    IN LYON, FRANCE, THOUSANDS OF STRIKERS FROM THE BERLIET HEAVY VEHICLE FACTORY, AND THE RHODIACETA MAN-MADE FIBRE PLANT WERE JOINED BY SYMPATHISERS YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WHEN THEY DEMONSTRATED FOR THE SECOND DAY RUNNING. RIOT POLICE STOOD BY, BUT DID NOT INTERVENE.

    THE STRIKE OF 7,200 WORKERS AT THE RHODIACETA PLANT TODAY ENTERED ITS 24TH DAY. THE COMPANY IS A SUBSIDIARY OF FRANCE'S LARGEST CHEMICAL CONCERN, RHONE-POULENC. AT THE GIANT BERLIET FACTORY, WHERE THE ENTIRE STAFF OF 12,000 TOOK PART IN A SIT-DOWN STRIKE, A LOCK-OUT HAS BEEN IN FORCE SINCE FRIDAY.

    THE STRIKERS ARE ALL PRESSING DEMANDS FOR WAGE CLAIMS AND IMPROVED WORKING CONDITIONS. ANOTHER 5,000 WORKERS AT ST. NAZAIRE HAVE ALSO BEEN LEFT UNEMPLOYED BY A LOCK-OUT.

    THE PARIS STOCK EXCHANGE, WHICH HAS SLUMPED DURING THE PAST WEEK'S SOCIAL UNREST, YESTERDAY REMAINED AT WHAT WAS GENERALLY BELIEVED TO BE THE LOWEST LEVEL SINCE 1962.
