  • Description

Six armed Arab commandos -- including at least one girl -- today (Wednesday) held forty five passengers and eight crew members hostage for eight hours at Athens airport while trying to negotiate the release of other commandos being held in Greece. The aircraft, and Olympic Airways Boeing 727 was hi-jacked on a flight from Beirut to Athens.

The aircraft later took off from Athens carrying the commandos, the seven craw members and an official of the International Red Cross, who had offered himself as a hostage.

When the aircraft landed at Athens the hi-jackers demanded a meeting with the Greek Justice Minister and the release of seven colleagues imprisoned in Greece. After a day of hard negotiating and discussion ??? during which the commandos twice threatened to blow up the grounded aircraft -- the Greek government agreed to release the interned commandos within a month. The passengers were then released.

Several Arab ambassadors were summoned to the airport in an attempt to persuade the hi-jackers to release the passengers. The aircraft, on orders from the commandos, was parked in a remote corner of the airport. When the passengers were eventually released they had to walk 500 yards to buses to take them to the terminal buildings.

Late tonight the airliner was reported to have landed in Cairo. It was expected to begin the return flight to Athens in a short time.
