    MAGNE THOMASSEN, OF NORWAY, WON THE 500 METERS EVENT IN A TIME OF 42.2 SECONDS. IN THE 5000 METERS, KNUT JOHANNESEN SET A NEW CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD TIME IN 7 MINUTES 47.1 SECONDS. ANOTHER NORWEGIAN, PER IVAR MOE WAS SECOND, AND RUSSIA'S YURI YUMASHEV THIRD.

    AFTER YESTERDAY'S EVENTS, ANT ANTSON, OF RUSSIA LED THE OVERALL CLASSIFICATION WITH 89.6 POINT. YUMASHEV WAS LYING SECOND AND NORWAY'S PER IVAR MOE WAS THIRD.

    LAST YEAR'S WORLD CHAMPION, JOHNNY NILSSON OF SWEDEN, WHO HOLDS MOST OF THE WORLD'S RECORDS AND WAS ONE OF THE FAVOURITES IN THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, DID NOT COME UP TO EXPECTATIONS AND FINISHED THE DAY IN 17 PLACE IN THE OVERALL LIST.

    THIRTY-ONE SKATERS FROM 12 NATIONS ARE COMPETING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WHICH END TODAY, (SUNDAY).
