The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger denied on Saturday (5 June) that the U.S. had tacitly supported the Syrian military incursion into Lebanon.
Dr. Kissinger said the U.S. was firm in its stand that there should be no outside intervention in Lebanon. The Secretary of State was speaking after a 90-minute meeting with the United Nations Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim.
The two men discussed the Middle East situation, Cyprus, southern Africa and international economic questions during their meeting in the Secretary General's office
Syria has said it will not withdraw its forces until a permanent ceasefire came into force in Lebanon. They also want the president-elect, Elias Sarkis, to take office immediately.
Syrian forces moved into Lebanon in strength last week and are now positioned in the Bekaa Valley,in the east of the country.
