    Background: IN ORDER THAT THE SALMON MAY GO UP STRAIGHT THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY BOARD (EIRE) HAVE BUILT THIS NEW TYPE LIFT. IT IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD. THE LIFT IS 113FT HIGH. IT TOOK TWO YEARS TO BUILD.

    THE LIFT WORKS ON A 4 HOUR CYCLE, TWO HOURS FOR THE FISH TO ENTER AT THE BOTTOM AND TWO HOURS TO EMPTY AT THE TOP. MOST FISH ARE 16LB IN WEIGHT.

    IN ITS SHORT SPELL SINCE IT WAS PUT INTO OPERATION (ONE WEEK) OVER 200 FISH HAVE PASSED THROUGH THE EQUIPMENT WAS MADE IN BRITAIN. ELL ELVERS ALSO PASS UP THE LIFT. AT LEAST 15,000 SALMON GO UP STREAM EVERY YEARS. THE E.S.B. SELL SOME OF THE SALMON AND SOLD GBP14,000 WORTH DURING 1958.
