  • Description

About 2,000 Greek-Cypriot students, demonstrating for a fair solution to the Cyprus crisis, marched to the United States Embassy in Athens on Wednesday (30 October) night.

After assembling at Athens University, the students disobeyed police orders and marched towards the Embassy, shouting anti-American slogans and carrying placards demanding that the United States withdraw from its military bases in Greece.

Police cordoned off the Embassy building and the marchers stopped nearby. Most of them later dispersed without incident. But about 20 remained, saying that they would stay in the street outside the Embassy on hunger strike for the duration of the current United Nations General Assembly debate on the Cyprus crisis.

The students also showed their support for the deposed President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios. The Archbishop's plans to return to Cyprus to resume his Presidency towards the end of November were disclosed in Athens earlier in the week.
