    SWISS MOTORCYCLIST LUIGI TAVERI BROKE THE LAP RECORD TWICE AT THE ISLE OF MAN ON JUNE 6TH, WINNING THE 125 c.c. LIGHTWEIGHT RACE AND RECORDING HIS FIRST T.T. VICTORY. HE FINISHED OVER A MINUTE AHEAD OF SECOND PLACE-GETTER, T.ROBB OF IRELAND (NO. 8).

    THIRD WAS AUSTRALIAN TOM PHILLIS (NO. 5), LAST YEAR'S 125 c.c. WORLD CHAMPION . LATER IN THE DAY, DURING THE MAIN EVENT OF THE AFTERNOON, PHILLIS WAS TO BE KILLED WHEN HIS MACHINE CRASHED THROUGH A HEDGE.

    THE RACE WAS A TRIUMPH FOR THE JAPANESE MADE HONDA MACHINES WHICH TOOK FIRST FIVE PLACES. TAVERI (NO. 6) COMPLETED THE MOUNTAIN COURSE AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 89.88 M.P.H., AFTER BREAKING HIS OWN LAP TIME AND SETTING A NEW RECORD OF 90.13 M.P.H.

    ROBB'S AVERAGE FOR THE 113 MILE COURSE WAS 88.55 M.P.H. AND PHILLIS, 88.30
    JAPANESE ACE KUNIMITSU TAKAHASHI (No. 2) WAS CRITICALLY INJURED SOON AFTER THE START OF THIS RACE, THE LIGHTWEIGHT EVENT, WHEN HE RAN OFF THE ROAD.

    FIFTY--EIGHT RIDERS FROM 12 COUNTRIES FOR THE EVENT.
