On the slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily's angry volcano, a family flees the relentless advance of the wall of lava that will slowly crush their farmhouse home. Their tragedy today (Wednesday) is typical of the fate confronting scores of families whose homes and livelihood are threatened by the volcano's eruption. The people who fled from their doomed house today sought refuge in the nearby village of Fornazzo. But their stay may be only temporary, for the village is also threatened by Etna's lava flows.
SYNOPSIS: On and on rolls the relentless wall of lava, grinding down the sides of Sicily's Mount Etna. On Wednesday, tragedy struck this family. The lava had been bearing down upon their farmhouse on the volcano's slopes. Finally, they were forced to accept the inevitable, collect their remaining possessions and flee to the nearby village of Fornazzo. The mother of the family dutifully locked the door before leaving.
But neither the locked door nor prayers could halt the lava, and shortly afterwards their home was destroyed.
The peasants show remarkable stoicism in the face of the lava. Vineyards and orchards directly in the path of destruction are tended regardless. But now it seems almost certain that houses on the outskirts of Fornazzo village are doomed. The authorities are making plans for the people to be billeted in nearby towns.
