  • Description

THE KING GEORGE V STEAM LOCOMOTIVE, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS BUILT IN BRITAIN, HAS COME OUT OF MOTHBALLS FOR DISPLAY AT THE HEADQUARTERS OF A CIDER MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN HEREFORD, U.K.

THE LOCOMOTIVE WAS THE FIRST OF 30 BUILT IN ITS CLASS, FROM 1927. IT WAS SHIPPED THEN TO THE UNITED STATES FOR ONE YEAR, AS A SPECIAL EXHIBIT ON THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. DURING THIS TIME IT WAS FITTED WITH ITS NOW FAMOUS BRASS BELL, WHICH WAS A COMPULSORY FITTING ON AMERICAN RAILROADS.

SINCE 1960 THE LOCOMOTIVE HAS BEEN OUT OF ACTION AND STORED AT THE SWINDON RAILWAY WORKS IN WILTSHIRE, WHERE IT WAS BUILT. IT OPERATED ON LINES BETWEEN LONDON AND WOLVERHAMPTON, LONDON AND BRISTOL, AND LONDON AND PLYMOUTH. AT SWINDON TODAY (FRIDAY) MANY WILLING HANDS WERE AVAILABLE TO HELP PULL THE VETERAN FROM ITS RESTING PLACE IN PREPARATION FOR ITS TRIP TO HEREFORD. IT WAS EVEN TOASTED WITH A GLASS OF CIDER.
