  • Description

An emergency session of the Palestine National Council, on which all the 11 commando organisations are represented, opened in Amman yesterday (Thursday), with attacks on the acceptance of the peace-talks proposals by Egypt and Jordan. The meeting had been postponed for six hours to allow Mr. Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, to return from his talks with President Nasser in Cairo.

In addition to the 115 members of the Council, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Egyptian Arab Socialist Union, the Iraqi and Libyan Revolutionary Command Councils, and delegates from Syria, Algeria, Southern Yemen and Sudan.

Opening the meeting, the Chairman, Mr. Yahia Hammoudah described the peace moves as plots, and said the Palestine people would persist in their revolution until Palestine was liberated and the people had returned to their homes. Speakers from Syria and Iraq re-emphasised their countries' rejection of a political settlement between the Arab States and Israel, and pledged their continued support for the struggle by the Palestine Arabs.

Mr. Arafat, the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, and one of the leading figures in the commando movement, returned in time to attend the adjourned meeting, but did not speak at the opening session.
