Background: Iranian students in Italy held a hunger strike in Rome on Thursday (14 September) to protest against the killing in Iran of 500 people during the recent troubles there.
SYNOPSIS: The first Iranian students began a hunger strike on the previous Saturday (9 September), on the day when left-wing Italian students demonstrated. In that earlier demonstration, students had hurled fire bombs at the police, who had retaliated with tear gas grenades and truncheons. The Iranian students wear masks because they fear reprisals against their families in Iran, if they are recognised.
The students have written to the President of Radio televisione Italian (RAI) asking for timeslots to debate on television and radio. They claim to have daily contact with the opposition in Iran.
