Background: Japan's Empress Nagako observes her 60th birthday in the 500-year-old, moated palace grounds in downtown Tokyo.The Empress spends the day receiving visits and well-wishes from her family, former schoolmates, friends and members of the government.
Her sons, Crown Prince Akihito and Prince Yoshi, along with her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Michiko and her daughter, former Princess Suga who is now married to a commoner, pay visits to the palace of the Emperor and Empress to wish the Empress a happy birthday.The Empress, with Emperor Hirohito , lunches with their sons and three -year-old grandson, Prince Hiro, at the palace.
In the morning, Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda and other government leaders pay their respects and in the afternoon the Empress receives birthday wishes from her former classmates.
