Background: On the eve of his departure on Vacation today, Prime Minister Nehru had last minute discussions with Pandit Pant - acting Prime Minister during Nehru's absence - and Krishna Menon.
A Russian TU 104 was standing at the airport - earlier it had brought the Russian Air Delegation visiting India - as Mr. Nehru's personal servant garlanded him, and ladies applied Kum Kum and touched his feet - a typical Indian way of saying good-bye.
An Indian Air Force Dakota was standing by to take Prime Minister Nehru to Manali - a lovely hill station in the Punjab. A tired man after his recent tours and many official engagements, Mr. Nehru will be away for about 20 days. The vacation comes in the wake of his offer to resign which the Congress Party and the country vehemently rejected - but agreed to his insistence on a good rest.
