Background: Lindsay (no "E") CORRECT SPELLING: "LINDSAY John Lindsay is a Republican Congressman. He has consistently been elected from the "Silk Stocking" district in New York City. He is a liberal, and at the Republican nominating convention in San Francisco, walked out wen Goldwater was nominated. He has opted to leave his congressional post and run for Mayor of New York, which has not had a Republican Mayor since Fiorello LaGuardia in the 30's. He has a good chance of winning since Mayor Robert Wagner, a Democrat, has announced that he will not run again and there is no Democrat of stature to replace him. Lindsay is felt to be the bright young man of the Republican party; he is already a national figure and if he wins the Mayorality, he stands a good chance of being the Republican Party's next presidential nominee. He is at the moment attempting to put together a Fusion ticket which will feature Democrats and Liberals (New York has a Liberal Party) as running mates for him. He received last week the Liberal Party's endorsement, a major boost. The Liberal Party is a significant third force in city politics. It normally supports liberal Democrats where it does not run its own people.
