Archaeologists digging near Athens believe they have made a discovery which will later history books. They have uncovered skeletons of servants killed fighting alongside their masters during the historic Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Until now it was widely believed that servants were kept behind locked doors during ancient wars to keep them from escaping.
The Battle of Marathon was fought between the Athenians and the invading Persians. Because the Greeks were vastly outnumbered the theory has been put forward that servants were pressed into service by their masters....a move which seemingly swung the battle against the Persians.
The graves uncovered by archaeologists lie in the Marathon Valley, not far from Athens. Nearby are the diggings which revealed the Tombs of the Warriors of Plateau who offered their services to the Athenians in their fight for survival.
