Background: High-ranking ministers from Ethiopia and Sudan mat in Addis Ababa on July 17 to hold discussions on the long-standing border dispute between their countries and other matters of common interest.

It was the first meeting in two years of the Ethiopian-Sudanese Ministerial Consultative Committee.

The Ethiopian side was led by the Minister of foreign Affairs, Doctor Menasse Haule, whose delegation included Defence Minister Lieutenant-General Kebede Gebre.

The Sudanese ministers were led by the foreign Minister, Doctor Mansour Khaled.

The meeting adjourned after a day of talks to allow ministers to attend Cabinet meetings. It was due to resume on Wednesday July 26.

A major agenda item was the report of a joint borderer commission which met in Khartoum last month. Ethiopia maintains that the actual border does not conform to that laid down 70 years ago in a treaty between Emperor Menelik of Ethiopia and the British administration of Sudan. The Sudanese in turn complain that Ethiopian farmers are cultivating land deep inside Sudanese territory.

Another matter before the committee was Ethiopia's claim that Sudan is sheltering a number of Eritrean rebels.
