West German Chancellor Willy Brandt and his family flew into Nairobi yesterday (Monday) for a fishing holiday. After being welcomed by Kenya Vice-President Daniel Moi and Foreign Affairs Minister Njoroge Mungai, the West German leader remarked that he hoped to relax and escape from politics during his Kenya visit.
It is nevertheless expected that on January 14, the day he returns to Europe, Herr Brandt will meet President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya.
Herr Brandt's wife, daughter and nine-year-old son are accompanying him on his 18-day visit. Besides trying his hand at some trout fishing at a resort 10 miles (160 kms) north of Nairobi, the West German Chancellor will also be visiting the major Kenya tourist attractions.
Herr Brandt previously visited Kenya in 1963, when he was mayor of West Berlin.
