  • Description

Four United States destroyers are visiting the Turkish ports of Trabzon and Samsun in the Black Sea, and on Saturday (20 November) they were filmed passing through the Bosphorous from Istanbul. The destroyers are the USS Hawkins, USS Furst, USS O'Hare, and USS Robert L Wilson. During their journey north through the straits, the destroyers passed close to Soviet merchant shipping, much of which is based at Black Sea ports. The Soviet Navy makes constant use of the Bosphorous on regular patrols and special manoeuvres throughout the year, and has.....during recent months in particular....been closely watched by the United States Sixth Fleet and its NATO allies who are anxious about further increased in Soviet naval strength in the Mediterranean. A 1959 agreement allows U.S. vessels into the Black Sea but their passage through the Bosphorous has been comparatively rare.
