  • Description

In a speech outlining Egypt's foreign policy following the October war with israel, the country's Deputy Premier for Information and Culture. Dr. Abdel Kader Hatem, said Egypt would attend the forthcoming Geneva Peace Conference, while keeping an eye open for a possible Israeli attack.

Speaking in Cairo on Saturday (8 December), Dr. Hatem emphasised that his country would not let the Conference become a platform for israeli manoeuvres, nor would there be a return to the pre-war stalemate.

Peace was a long way away, said the Egyptian Deputy Premier, and he added that the real threat to peace was the Israeli refusal to implement United Nations' resolutions. He felt the prerequisites for peace were the restoration of rights to the Palestinian people and the Israeli withdrawal from occupied Arab territories.

Dr. Hattem paid tribute to the support given to his country by the soviet Union and many non-aligned nations, including those African nations who broke-off diplomatic relations with Israel; "We shall not forget the sacrifices of the African States. The October War developments have opened new vistas for close cooperation with the African countries."
