    Empress Farah Diba of Iran arrived in Dakar on Wednesday (25 February) for a four-day official visit designed to strengthen cooperation between Iran and Senegal.
    The Empress was accompanied by Prime Minister Abbas Hoveyda who visited Senegal in 1975.
    Empress Farah said her visit confirmed the desire of Iran and Senegal to strengthen their already friendly relations and bore witness to their desire for solidarity and cooperation.
    President Leopold Senghor said in a speech the Empress was a "rare phenomenon in today's world" with a diversity of talents. He called on the woman of his country to follow her example.
    The Empress received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dakar during her visit, the first woman to do so.
    On Thursday (26 February) the Empress laid the foundation stone of an oil refinery at Kayar 50 kilometres (26 miles) north of Dakar, the first part of an industrial complex built with Iranian assistance.
