  • Description

Britain's Derby Country beat Benfica of Portugal 3-0, in the first leg of their European second-round Cup match. the British side are thus in a strong position for the second leg, which will be played in Portugal in two weeks.

Eusebio, Benfica's 36-year-old ace, failed to find the form which has made him one of the most feared goalscorers in the world. Some commentators had forecast that Eusebio's very reputation could overawe the Derby defenders. But McFarland, Derby's international centre half, proved that Eusebio could be contained.

Derby - playing at home today (Wednesday) - played a brilliant attacking game, scoring all their goals in the first half. Roy McFarland headed the first home after seven minutes; twenty minutes later, Kevin Hector added another, and John McGovern made it three, six minutes before half-time.

Benfica are leading the Portuguese first division with an astounding record -- Played 7, Won 7; goals scored - 33, Against 2. Derby are lagging at 16th in the British first division, and some sportwriters had predicted a "massacre" before the 38,500 home crowd. But, before the match, McFarland commented "We always rise to the big occasion. The better the team, the better we play."
