    THE MARCHERS - 30 PERCENT NEGRO, 70 PER CENT WHITE - PROTESTED SEGREGATED HOUSING IN GROSSE POINT, MICHIGAN, A SUBURB OF THE AUTO-MAKING CAPITAL OF DETROIT (AMERICAN MIDWEST). ABOUT 450 PERSONS PARTICIPATED.

    THE MARCH WAS PEACEFUL. THE MARCHERS GATHERED AT A MAIN INTERSECTION, THEN WALKED TO THE GROSSE POINT HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE ROMNEY SPOKE TO A GATHERING OF 1,000 PEOPLE. HE SAID THAT A NEW CONSTITUTION, EFFECTIVE 1 JANUARY 1964, WILL END DISCRIMINATION IN HIS STATE.

    (ROMNEY FORMERLY WAS PRESIDENT OF A MAJOR CAR MANUFACTURING COMPANY, AMERICAN MOTORS, MAKER OF THE RAMBLER AUTOMOBILE. HE WAS ELECTED GOVERNOR LAST YEAR. HE ALSO IS CONSIDERED A STRONG POSSIBILITY FOR THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION IN 1964 TO OPPOSE PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY. ROMNEY SPOKE ABOUT DISCRIMINATION HE SUFFERED BECAUSE OF HIS MORMON RELIGION. HE SAID THAT HIS PEOPLE WERE DRIVEN OUT OF THE UNITED STATES TO MEXICO, WHERE HE WAS BORN BECAUSE OF THEIR FAITH.)
