July 19th: Italy are out of the World Cup. The much-boosted team were fancied for a place in the final, were beaten by outsiders North Korea by one goal to nil in their match at Ayrsome Park tonight. Korea, with three points from three matches in Group Four, will go into the last eight if Chile fail to beat Russia tomorrow.
Italy, in the dark shorts, had come through with only one victory to their credit - against Chile - and despite seven changes they had none of their old zest and fire in attack. They missed two chances early on, then faced a serious setback when their captain Bulgarelli collided with Pak Seung Zin and collapsed. The Italians key player, Bulgarelli was taken off with torn ligaments and Italy faced the rest of the match with only ten men. Seven minutes later the North Koreans scored their all important goal. Pak Doo Ik took possession 25 yards out, then let fly from the edge of the penalty area with a hard, low shot which completely beat Albertosi in the Italian goal. (Pause) A tremendous moment for the North Koreans as they went ahead for the first time in the tournament. And the Ayresome Park crowd were giving them plenty of support. In the second half Italy's ten-man team came out fighting with their best attacking football, and Barison made several dangerous raids. But the Korean defence improved as the game went on and Li Chang Myung was on top of his form in the North Korea goal.
With the crowd urging them on the Koreans tried hard to increase their lead, showing far more imagination in attack them their more accomplished opponents.
