The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Andrew Young arrived in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday (21 March) for talks with the Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere. After their meeting, Mr. Young said he hoped that the next 30 days would see the creation of a plan of action on internationally acceptable political settlements in Rhodesia and Namibia (South West Africa).
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Young's visit to Africa was organised at short notice. At the airport to meet him was Mr. James Spain, the United States Ambassador to Tanzania. When he spoke to newsmen later Mr. Young explained America's attitude to the internal settlement in Rhodesia.
Although there was no formal communique after Mr. Young's meeting with President Nyerere, Reuters news agency says Mr. Young assured the Tanzanian leader that America still regarded the Anglo-American proposals as the best basis for any Rhodesian settlement.
