  • Description

MOHAMMED BEN BELLA, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE ALGERIAN 'PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT', RECEIVED A TUMULTUOUS WELCOME MARCH 21 WHEN HE ARRIVED IN THE MOROCCAN CAPITAL OF RABAT AFTER FIVE YEARS OF DETENTION IN FRANCE.

THE ALGERIAN LEADER, ACCOMPANIED BY FOUR OTHER MINISTERS RELEASED AT THE SAME TIME - MARCH 18 - RECEIVED A HERO'S WELCOME FROM KING HASSAN II, BEN KHEDDA, PRIME MINISTER OF THE 'PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT'; OFFICERS OF THE FLN, AND MANY OTHER OFFICIALS, WHEN HE REACHED THE GATES OF THE CITY.

AFTER TRADITIONALLY SALUTING THE FLAG ON A RICHLY CARPETED ROAD, BEN BELLA DROVE THROUGH A WIDELY CHEERING, FLAG-WAVING CROWD OF 200,000 TO THE ROYAL PALACE. HUNDREDS BROKE THROUGH POLICE BARRIERS TO SWAMP HIS OPEN CAR; BUNCHES OF FLOWERS WERE THROWN AT HIM AS THE PEOPLE CHANTED "LONG LIVE FREE ALGERIA" AND "LONG LIVE BEN BELLA".

EARLIER, M. BEN BELLA AND HIS PARTY HAD LANDED AT BNOUASSEAUR AIR BASE IN A PLANE PROVIDED BY KING HASSAN. MEMBERS OF THE ALGERIAN DELEGATION TO THE EVIAN TALKS ALSO REACHED THERE - THE ARRIVAL OF BOTH GROUPS WAS KEPT SECRET TO FORESTALL POSSIBLE ATTEMPTS ON THEIR LIVES BY FRENCH EXTREMISTS.
