Background: PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA, AT PRESENT TAKING AN EARLY SUMMER HOLIDAY TO RECUPERATE FORM A MILD HEART ATTACK, HAS BEEN ADVISED BY HIS HEART SPECIALIST TO CUT HIS WORKING DAY TO TWO HOURS. NOW BELIEVED TO BE NEARLY 80 YEARS OLD, PRESIDENT KENYATTA HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN KENYAN POLITICAL LIFE SINCE 1920 AND WAS AT ONE TIME IMPRISONED BY THE BRITISH ON A CHARGE OF ORGANISING THE MAU MAU MOVEMENT.

JOMO KENYATTA IS A MEMBER OF KENYA'S LARGEST TRIBE, THE KIKUYU. THE DATE OF HIS BIRTH IS UNCERTAIN AND HIS AGE HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AS AT LEAST 73 YEARS AND PROBABLY MORE. HIS NAME, JOMO, IS TAKEN FROM "JOHNSTONE", THE NAME HE WAS GIVEN AT A MISSION STATION WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TEN YEARS OLD. "KENYATTA" CAME FROM THE KIKUYU WORD FOR AN ORNAMENTAL BELT HE ALWAYS WORE.

HIS POLITICAL LIFE BEGAN IN 1920 WHEN HE JOINED A KIKUYU ORGANISATION SEEKING TO RECLAIM TRIBAL LANDS TAKEN BY WHITE SETTLERS. LATER AFTER VISITS TO EUROPE AND A LONG PERIOD OF STUDY IN ENGLAND, HE HELPED FORM THE PAN-AFRICAN FEDERATION.

HE RETURNED TO KENYA IN 1946 AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR BECAME PRESIDENT OF THE KENYAN AFRICAN UNION. IN 1950, THE MAU MAU MOVEMENT BEGAN A WAVE OF VIOLENCE WHICH SWEPT KENYA AND THE BRITISH AUTHORITIES CLAIMED THE KENYA AFRICAN UNION WAS BEHIND IT. KENYATTA AND FIVE OTHERS WERE TRIED ON CHARGES OF MANAGING THE MAU MAU AND WERE SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS IMPRISONMENT.

JOMO KENYATTA WAS RELEASED AFTER SIX YEARS, BUT HIS MOVEMENTS WERE STILL RESTRICTED. HE WAS FINALLY RELEASED FROM ALL RESTRICTION IN AUGUST 1961, AND IMMEDIATELY BECAME PRESIDENT OF THE KENYAN AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION. IN 1962, ELECTED TO THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, HE WAS LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.

THE SAME YEAR A COALITION GOVERNMENT WAS FORMED IN KENYA AND JOMO KENYATTA BECAME MINISTER OF STATE WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS AND ECONOMIC PLANNING.

IN THE 1963 ELECTION UNDER THE NEW CONSTITUTION GIVING KENYA A MEASURE OF SELF-GOVERNMENT, THE KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION WON AN OVERALL MAJORITY AND JOMO KENYATTA BECAME PRIME MINISTER. HE ADDRESSED MEETINGS OF WHITE FARMERS, REASSURING THEM ABOUT THEIR FUTURE UNDER AN AFRICAN GOVERNMENT. THERE WAS SOME UNREST IN THE NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT WHERE SECESSIONISTS WANTED SOMALIA TO TAKE OVER THE DISTRICT, BUT PRIME MINISTER KENYATTA SENT KENYA TROOPS INTO THE AREA AND THE TROUBLE WAS SOON SETTLED. AS ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE, THE NEW PRIME MINISTER OFFERED A FREE PARDON IN DECEMBER 1963 TO ALL REMAINING MEMBERS OF THE MAU MAU. FIELD MARSHALL MWARIAMA WAS ONE OF THE FIRST OF THE GUERILLA LEADERS TO BRING HIS TROOPS OUT OF THE FOREST.

AT MID-NIGHT ION DECEMBER 11 1963 KENYA BECAME INDEPENDENT. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH PRESENTED PRIME MINISTER JOMO KENYATTA WITH THE DOCUMENTS OF INDEPENDENCE AND KENYA'S OWN FLAG FOR THE FIRST TIME. WITHIN A YEAR KENYA BECAME A REPUBLIC WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH AND JOMO KENYATTA WAS ITS FIRST PRESIDENT.
