Background: Camel riders and horsemen of Southern Syria were among the vast rally to welcome President Nasser of the UAR at Der'a near the Jordanian Border Feb 25 during his tour of the country marking the second anniversary of the proclamation of the Union of Egypt and Syria.

Der'a is about 125 kilometres south of Damascus. The visit by the President was his first to the Southern Region since the Union's formation.

In a speech from the balcony from a Government building, the President reiterated his attacks on the 'Western Imperialists', and recalled the recent publication of Sir Anthony Eden's memoirs over Suez. Eden, the President said, represented the spirit of imperialism which assassinates peoples and sucks their blood.

Accompanying the President: Agrarian Reform Minister Tomeh Awdatallah; Egyptian Governor of Syria, Field Marshal Hakim Amer; and Interior Minister Serraj.

Tension rose this month in the Mid-East following the Israeli-Syrian border dispute. While President Nasser toured Syria warning against Western interference there, the Israeli Government announced a further concentration of UAR tanks, guns and troops along Israeli borders.
