  • Description

TWO EVENTS TOOK PLACE ON THE OPPOSITE SEA-BOARDS OF THE UNITED STATES YESTERDAY (MONDAY) IN CONNECTION WITH THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE AMERICAN NUCLEAR SUBMARINE "THRESHER".

ON THE WEST COAST THE LSD "POINT DEFIANCE" LEFT SAN DIEGO HARBOUR CARRYING THE 70-TON RESEARCH BATHYSCAPH "TRIESTE", TO BE USED IN ATTEMPTS TO TRACE THE SUBMARINE'S WHEREABOUTS. AFTER THE 4,900-MILE JOURNEY THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL TO NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, THE "TRIESTE" WILL BE TAKEN TO THE POINT 200-MILE EAST OF CAPE COD WHERE THE SUBMARINE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE SUNK IN 8,400 FEET OF WATER.

IN THE EAST, AT NEW YORK'S ST. PATRICK'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL, A REQUIEM MASS WAS OFFERED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BY CARDINAL SPELLMAN, MILITARY VICAR FOR THE UNITED STATES. A FLAG-DRAPED COFFIN SYMBOLIZED THE 129 MEN LOST ON THE "THRESHER", OVER WHICH AN HONOUR GUARD OF U.S. NAVY MEN STOOD AT ATTENTION. MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE MASS - AMONG THEM SENIOR NAVAL OFFICERS AND RELATIVES OF THE DEAD MEN - IN A CATHEDRAL STILL BRIGHT WITH EASTER FLOWERS.
