Background: A MASS RALLY TOOK PLACE AT NAIROBI AIRPORT YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TO WELCOME HOME KENYA'S PRIME MINISTER, MR JOMO KENYATTA, FROM CONFERENCES IN LONDON AND CAIRO.
THE CROWD, LATER ESTIMATED BY MR KENYATTA HIMSELF AT THREE-HUNDRED THOUSAND, WAVED AND CHEERED WILDLY AS THE PRIME MINISTER STEPPED OFF THE PLANE TO BE GREETED BY MEMBERS OF KENYA'S CABINET AND THE GOVERNOR GENERAL, SIR GEOFFREY DE FREITAS.
MR KENYATTA HAD BEEN AWAY FOR THREE WEEKS, ATTENDING FIRST THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTERS'S CONFERENCE IN LONDON, AND THEN THE AFRICAN UNITY CONFERENCE IN CAIRO.
HE WAS ALSO MET BY PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE OF TANGANYIKA, WHO HAD ARRIVED ON AN EARLIER FLIGHT.
IN AN ADDRESS TO THE HUGE CROWD, MR KENYATTA SAID THERE MUST BE NO "REVENGE" IN CONNECTION WITH THE RECENT ASSAULT ON HIM OUTSIDE HIS LONDON HOTEL.
HE SAID "EVERY COUNTRY HAS ITS MADMEN," AND QUOTED A KIKUYU TRIBE SAYING "IT IS ALWAYS THE AVENGER WHO IS WRONG."
MR KENYATTA SAID: "WE ARE A GROWN UP PEOPLE. WE DON'T FOLLOW THE STEPS OF A MADMAN. LET THE MATTER END THERE."
THERE HAVE BEEN DEMANDS FOR RETALIATORY ACTION IN KENYA, FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT, INCLUDING AN ECONOMIC BREAK WITH BRITAIN, NATIONALISATION OF BRITISH BUSINESS AND EXPULSION OF BRITISH RESIDENTS.
IN HIS ADDRESS MR KENYATTA ALSO ANNOUNCED THAT WORK WOULD BEGIN AT ONCE IN WORKING A ONE-PARTY SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT IN KENYA.
THE PRESENT OPPOSITION OF THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION IS THE KENYA AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC UNION, WHICH ADVOCATES A BREAKAWAY STATE IN KENYA.
LATER MR KENYATTA REVIEWED A KENYA ARMY GUARD OF HONOUR.
