  • Description

In the course of a week-long visit to Taiwan, President Joseph Mobutu spent three days in the central and southern part of the island, visiting economic development projects and the training bases of the Taiwan forces.

This official film shows his visits with Madame Mobutu to an air-base at Kangshan and naval base at Tsoying.

During his visit to Taiwan President Mobutu has had two meetings for talks with President Chiang Kai-Shek, in which they discussed such topics as continued support by the Congo for Taiwan at the United Nations, and expanded technical co-operation between the two countries.

Congo-Kinshasa has been a staunch supporter of Taiwan - now under-going difficult times in its struggle for recognition as the sole legal Government of China.

Congo-Kinshasa is among 21 African countries receiving technical aid from Taiwan. Under an agreement signed in 1966, Taiwan expanded its agricultural mission in the Congo from 11 to 51.

The Chinese experts are currently engaged in demonstration and extension work in areas suitable for rice-growing as well as in a pineapple processing factory.

SYNOPSIS: President Joseph Mobutu of Congo-Kinshasa has reviewed the fleet at the Tsoying naval base in southern Taiwan on Tuesday, in the company of Taiwan's Vice-President and Prime Minister C.K. Yen.

Also present to view Taiwan's considerable fleet of warships was Madame Mobutu, and a large contingent from the congolese President's 56-strong entourage on his week-long visit to Taiwan. Later President Mobutu moved on to review training units of army and navy at other bases in southern Taiwan.

Earlier at Taipei, the Congolese President had one meeting with President Chiang Kai-Shek, and he was due to have another before leaving the island.

Meanwhile however, President and Madame Mobutu were seeing the sights laid on for them at the Taiwan bases, during a three-day break in the south of the island.

One highlight was the American-style drilling of these Taiwan troops on the parade ground.

And everyone in the President's party enjoyed the spectacle of a massed parachute jump by a training unit.

Another group, the "Divine Dragon Team" which did some specially difficult fixed point jumping, was presented to the President and Madame Mobutu.

They held out a friendship banner to their African visitors.

President Mobutu then shook hands with the members of the team, and congratulated them on their display. He was later to conclude his visit to Taiwan on Wednesday.
