A COMMUNIST GUARD IN THE JOINT SECURITY AREA OF THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE DESERTED TO THE UNITED NATIONS SIDE LAST FRIDAY AFTER KILLING A RED ARMY CAPTAIN. THE INCIDENT CAME TO LIGHT DURING AN INVESTIGATION INTO A FIRING INCIDENT IN THE AREA THAT TOOK PLACE EARLY FRIDAY.

THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND ASKED A JOINT INVESTIGATION OF THE INCIDENT YESTERDAY, BUT THE COMMUNISTS FAILED TO APPEAR.

PROCEEDING WITH THE CHECK ON ITS OWN, THE U.N.C. PRODUCED PFC. YONG CHUL KIM (CQ) (note difference in Clipping and Captions in proper names), 20, [QUERY] A SPOKESMAN IDENTIFIED AS THE GUARD WHO DESERTED.

KIM TOLD LT. COL. WILLIAM WASHING (CQ), SENIOR U.N.C. MEMBER OF THE INVESTIGATING TEAM, THAT HE KILLED HIS CAPTAIN AND SURRENDERED HIMSELF TO THE U.N.C. SIDE.

KIM, ON DUTY AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PANMUNJON (CQ) MEETING AREA, SAID HE FIRST SUGGESTED TO THE CAPTAIN THAT THEY BOTH DESERT, BUT THE CAPTAIN WAS UNWILLING. HE SAID HE FIRED AT THE OFFICER THREE TIMES, THEN FLED.

KIM WAS PICKED UP BY AN AMERICAN LIEUTENANT ABOUT 400 YARDS SOUTH OF HIS GUARD POST.

THE DISCLOSURE CAME AS A SURPRISE. MONDAY THE U.N.C. REQUESTED A JOINT OVEBSERVER TEAM MEETING YESTERDAY TO INVESTIGATE THREE PISTOL SHOTS, WHICH IT SAID HAD BEEN FIRED IN THE JOINT SECURITY AREA LAST FRIDAY. THE REDS SAID A REPLY WILL BE MADE LATER THROUGH NORMAL MILITARY ARMISTICE COMMISSION ADMINISTRATIVE CHANNELS. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE COMPLAINT WAS RAISED ONLY TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM AN EARLIER COMMUNIST CHARGE.

COL. FRANK F. CARR (CQ), CHIEF OF THE U.N.C.M.A.C. SECRETARIAT TOLD THE COMMUNISTS, "YOU ARE BEGINNING TO SOUND LIKE A BROKEN PHONOGRAPH RECORD."
