President Luis Echeverria of Mexico ended a four-day official visit to Senegal on Sunday (13 July). During his stay he had talks with the President of Senegal, M. Leopold Sedar Senghor, on third world development...a dominant issue for many developing nations, which has led to friction with the United States on the price of raw materials, manufactured goods -- and oil.
Welcoming President Echeverria to Senegal, M. Senghor said that the major problem for the third world was one price of raw materials. The maintenance of peace depended on its solution.
He warned that he could not see how confrontation could be avoided if raw materials were not discussed in any future talks between industrialised countries, oil producers and the third world.
He said that when the French-sponsored Conference of Oil Producers and Consumers (with third world representation) reconvenes, it should start a general discussion on basic raw materials. And he repeated his warning of confrontation.
The oil conference broke up inconclusively in Paris earlier this year over demands that raw materials--other than oil--should be included int he conference agenda.
Algeria was the main supporter of the move, but met firm opposition from the United States. The conference was intended to prepare the ground for a full scale meeting of oil producers, consumers and third world nations later this year, which would make substantive decisions on world energy and economic problems.
Replying Doctor Echeverria called for the third world to form a common front. He said economic independence could only be achieved ??? active co-operation with other nations.
A major reason for the tour of the Mexican President is to gather support for Mexico's call for a fundamental revision of the ???economic system in favour of developing countries--an issue that will also be debated at the United Nations later this year. ??? has already set up a Third World Research Institute to find ??? ways of co-operating with other developing nations.
Before arriving in Senegal the Mexican President Visited Guyana. This week he is in Algeria and then goes on to Iran, Indian, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), Tanzania, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, ??? and Tobago and finally Cuba.
