  • Description

A DAWN RAID BY HONG KONG POLICE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) NETTED TWO TONS OF DANGEROUS DRUGS WITH A MARKET VALUE OF AROUND ONE MILLION POUNDS. THE DRUGS WERE SEIZED FROM A CHINESE JUNK INSIDE THE HARBOUR.

THE SEIZURE OF THE DRUGS IS THE LARGEST HAUL MADE IN THE COLONY FOR FIVE YEARS. THE JUNK WAS BOARDED IN YAUMATI TYPHOON SHLTER, A PROTECTIVE INLET RESERVED FOR SMALL BOATS.

A POLICE SPOKESMAN SAID THE HAUL INVOLVED MORE THAN 4,000 POUNDS OF RAW OPIUM AND 66 POUNDS OF MORPHINE.

THE OPIUM WAS CONTAINED IN A BUNDLE OF 60 CARTONS COVERED WITH SACKS.

SUPERINTENDENT DAVID LAM, OF THE COLONY'S NARCOTIC BUREAU, LED A TEAM OF 13 IN INTERCEPTING THE JUNK. HE SAID THE FOUR CHINESE OCCUPANTS, ALL FROM HONG KONG, WERE UNARMED AND OFFERED NO RESISTANCE.

LOCAL NEWSPAPER REPORTS STATED THE DRUGS CAME FROM THAILAND AND WERE DROPPED BY PARACHUTE JUST OUTSIDE HONG KONG TERRITORIAL WATERS FOR THE JUNK TO PICK OUT OF THE SEA.
