    In Iran, a Cabinet Minister in the country's new civilian government has resigned. General Fereidoun Jam, who was appointed War Minister in the government, announced his decision on Monday (8 January). United States officials in Washington said the resignation raised fresh doubts about the new administration's ability to take control, and end a year of turmoil in Iran. A fresh spate of violence flared up throughout Iran on Monday.

    SYNOPSIS: The latest demonstrations came on Monday - a day of mourning declared by the exiled religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeiny. Nine people died in the disturbances across the country. In the northwestern city of Tabriz, Cinemas, banks, shops and houses were set alight. Witnesses said troops stood by as the rioters swept through the streets. Two people were reported killed in the Caspian Sea town of Sari, with ten more injured in the clashes. In Rey, South of the capital, three people died and eight were injured.

    It was in the southern city of Yazd, that security forces beat off an attack on the headquarters of the SAVAK secret police. three of the attackers were reported killed.

    In another clash, in the town of Heir Isfahan, one demonstrators was killed and six injured. But in the capital, the demonstrators mainly confined themselves to burning tyres in the streets. There was some shooting, mostly in the air, in parts of the city. No casualties were reported.

    Demonstrators started to built barricades across some streets in Teheran, but they soon moved of when army vehicles, which had earlier kept out of sight, started to move in. Iran's Prime Minister has already started his attempts to defuse the situation by lifting martial law restrictions in some cities.
