    THE UNITED NATIONS OBSERVER IN CYPRUS, GENERAL GYANI, YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) VISITED GREEK AND TURKISH VILLAGES IN THE KYRENIA DISTRICT. HIS AIM WAS TO GAUGE, AT FIRST-HAND, FEELINGS BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES FOLLOWING RECENT CLASHES.

    AT MORPHOU, A GREEK-CYPRIOT VILLAGE, HE TALKED WITH SPECIAL POLICE -- A FORCE NOW BEING INCREASED TO 5,000 MEN. TRAVELLING THEN TO KATSIVERA HE MET THE LOCAL TURKISH CYPRIOTS; HEARING ALL THEIR PROBLEMS AT LENGTH.

    THE TURKISH CYPRIOT VICE-PRESIDENT, DR. FADIL KUTCHUK, YESTERDAY CLAIMED THAT CYPRUS WAS BEING TURNED INTO "ANOTHER CUBA". HE CALLED ON WESTERN POWERS AND THE UNITED NATIONS TO STOP "COMMUNIST ARMED INFILTRATION" BEFORE IT WAS TOO LATE.

    AND IN THE UNITED NATIONS ITSELF, THE SECRETARY-GENERAL, U THANT, YESTERDAY REFERRED TO THE "SERIOUSNESS AND URGENCY" OF THE CYPRUS SITUATION, WHICH HE DESCRIBED AS A "DANGEROUS CRISIS". HE REPORTED TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL THAT HIS PRIVATE PEACE NEGOTIATIONS HAD FAILED. BUT, PLEDGING CONTINUED EFFORTS TO EASE THE TENSION, U THANT SAID....
