  • Description

THE HEAVIEST AND MOST WIDESPREAD FALL OF SNOW FOR 26 YEARS GREETED THE CITIZENS OF JOHANNESBURG, THE CAPITAL OF SUNNY SOUTH AFRICA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) MORNING. IT DISRUPTED AIR, ROAD, RAIL AND TELEPHONE COMMUNICATIONS AND FOR ONE RELAXING MORNING TURNED THE CITY'S ADULTS INTO CHILDREN AGAIN.

ALMOST WITHOUT EXCEPTION, THE FIRST REACTION TO THE SNOW FALL, WAS TO START BUILDING SHOWMEN AND JOINING SNOWBALL FIGHTS. THROUGHOUT THE CITY ADULTS, WITH A SPRINKLING OF BUSMEN, POLICE AND NURSES JOINED IN THE STREET-CORNER "BATTLES." BUT IT WAS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WITWATERSRAND THAT SNOWBALLS FELL THE THICKEST.

HOWEVER, BY TWO O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON THE LAST OF THE SNOW THAT CHANGED A CITY'S PERSONALITY, AND OFFICIALLY RECORDED AS THREE INCHES DEEP, HAD MELTED AWAY. LEFT BEHIND WERE THE HAPPY MEMORIES OF PEOPLE WHO HAD SEEN SNOW FALLING FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND PEACH BLOSSOMS COVERED WITH SNOW. AND IT PROVIDED ONE CITY NEWSPAPER WITH A STORY FOR EVERY INCH OF ITS FRONT PAGE.

(THE SNOWFALL IS NOT EXPECTED TO AFFECT FRUIT AND FLOWER CROPS. IF ANYTHING, SAID A LEADING LOCAL ORTICULTURALIST, THEY SHOULD BENEFIT FROM THE THINNING OUT. OUT OF THE CITY, A NUMBER OF FARMS WERE ISOLATED BY SIX FOOT DEEP DRIFTS AND CATTLE AND SHEEP WERE TRAPPED. SNOW LAST FELL IN JOHANNESBURG 16 YEARS AGO.)
