  • Description

Police riot-squads clashed with about 50 demonstrators in Jerusalem on Thursday (May 3). They were protesting against the military parade due to be held on May 7th to mark Israel's 25th Anniversary.

The demonstrators behaved in a peaceable and orderly manner, but they did not have a police permit and refused to disperse despite warnings. The police, helmeted and baton-wielding, scattered them and took some for questioning.

About 300,000 are expected to watch Monday's parade. Among the military "hardware" on display will be Soviet tanks, captured in 1967 and now improved, and a giant 155mm self-propelled gun. The emphasis overall will be on the improved mobility of the Israeli army.

The demonstrators object to the parade on the grounds that the cost - 13.6 million israeli pounds (1 1/4 million starling) - is far too high at a time when Israel is struggling to salve urgent social problems. In an opinion poll, 50% of one of the most highly taxed populations in the world said the parade was too expensive.
