  • Description

Supporters of former President Juan Peron blocked the streets around his suburban Buenos Aires mansion on Sunday (19 november), but their hero appealed for prudence. Thousand of Peronists, who assembled on Saturday outside the house, were still there on Sunday, chanting his name continually.

It was the liveliest pro-Peron demonstration in the capital since Mr. Peron returned on Friday (17 November) from more than 17-years exile. His return was not marked by the expected blaze of glory, possibly because supporters' enthusiasm was dampened by rain or by the government's elaborate military security involving 36,000 troops with tanks and armoured cars.

When the 77-year-old ex-President landed at Ezeiza airport, he was whisked away to a nearby hotel. After a night of hard negotiations with Argentina's present government, he was finally allowed to leave the airport for his three-storey mansion.

In a speech to his supporters from the balcony of his residence, Mr. Peron said, "We prefer disorder and freedom to order and slavery." Having ruled Argentina from 1946 until he was toppled by a coup in 1955, the ex-President has indicated he is back in Argentina to stay.
