More than seven million Egyptians yesterday (Thursday 15th) cast their votes for a new President....among them the sole presidential nominee Anwar El Sadat.
Eighty-five per cent of the registered electorate of the United Arab Republic cast their votes, and of these, three-quarters supported Mr. Sadat's nomination as successor to the late President Nasser.
Although polling booths in Cairo were quieter than expected, those in small villages and remoter areas attracted long queues of electors. In Meid Abul Koum, the village where mr. Sadat was born 51 years ago, 540 voters supported Mr. Sadat. There were still queues at the booth when he arrived there to cast his vote. The village is 85 kilometres from Cairo in the district of Tella, and has a total population of 1,500.
Mr. Sadat will be sworn-in as the new President of the United arab Republic on Saturday (17th October).
