This event which was cancelled two weeks ago due to rough seas was held in Galway Bay under slightly better conditions this time. Teams competed from many parts of the country including Kerry, Aran, Mayo, Donegal, Galway and Clare. The crews go to great trouble to grease the bottom of these very light boats before been put into the water to race over a triangular course marked by three bouys.
From the shore over 75,000 (seventy five thousand) people watched the event which is the main attraction in the West of Ireland National Festival.
The crew without shirts are from Donegal. During the race the water suddenly became infested with Sharks and all the official boats had to chase the Sharks out to sea. Towards the end of the race the sea been very rough and in the final were the winning team from Conemara, Co. Galway.
In the final scene the crew with their valuable Cup and a cash prize of GBP50. (fifty pounds).
