  • Description

Eight Commonwealth countries began a five day conference to discuss possible medical co-operation at Lusaka, Zambia on Monday(November 13).

The conference at Mulungushi Hall was attended by ministers from Kenya, Tanzania Uganda, Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland and Zambia. Representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Common-wealth Secretariat also took part in the discussions.

The conference considered plans for pooling resources and experience over a wide range. Areas for possible co-operation include training and research.

Co-operation would reduce duplication of effort and ensure the full use of medical facilities in east, central and southern Africa.

Opening the conference, President Kaunda of Zambia, stressed the necessity for regional medical co-operation.

The day the conference was opened Zambia's Health Minister, Mr. Alexander Chikwanda, warned the Roman Catholic Church that it would loss any showdown over the issue of legalised abortions. Roman Catholic bishops had said abortion was morally wrong in an attack on a recently passed law legalising abortions in Zambia.
