REPORTER: "In the first match, the under-18s, Murgon would make the team from the aboriginal settlement of Cherbourg. In itself the fact that the Cherbourg Panthers were to meet the Murgon Bulls in the grand final was not remarkable. What was remarkable was the Panther's scorch. Cyril Fisher, known affectionately as Matey or Grumpy, is totally blind. But, with the help of a commentator, his seeing eye dog Kelly, and a good pair of lungs, he bullied and cajoled his young charges into a winning combination. It'll be a tough match. The fact that the teams are near neighbours is certain to make the rivalry more intense and while Cherbourg has lost only one match this season and Murgon has lost six both have schoolboy reps in the side and both want to win. Matey Fisher listens from the sideline as Jack Watson gives a running commentary on the play. Its Matey's only insight. But, it seems to be enough. And the blindness which has been with him since 1948 certainly hasn't weakened his capacity to command. At half time the score was 8-3 and the Cherbourg team was clearly on top. And then in the second half they piled on more points and managed to hold off a late rally by Murgon to run out winners by 22 to 11. There was no doubt that it was Matey Fisher's day and his team told him so. There's little doubt that the under-18s will want to have Grumpy back, that is if no one else has snapped him up in the meantime.
