  • Description

THE WEST GERMAN ARMY TODAY (THURSDAY) GAVE A PREVIEW OF ITS NEW SHORT RANGE MISSILE, THE U.S.-BUILT SERGEANT ROCKET, WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE CORPORAL MISSILE THAT HAS BEEN IN SERVICE WITH THE BUNDESWEHR FOR SOME TIME.

THE DISPLAY WAS STAGED AT THE ARTILLERY SCHOOL AT ESCHWEILER, AND DEMONSTRATED THE MOBILITY AND EASE OF HANDLING OF THE MISSILE - STATED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE IN THE N.A.T.O. ARSENAL.

A SURFACE-TO-SURFACE WEAPON, THE SERGEANT HAS RANGE OF 75 MILES (120 KMS) AND IS VULNERABLE TO ANY KNOWN ANTI-MISSILE COUNTERMEASURES. IT IS 30 FEET (9.1 METRES) LONG, HAS A DIAMETER OF 31 INCHES (78.7 CENTIMETRES) AND IS ABLE TO ATTAIN SUPERSONIC SPEED DUE TO IT SOLID-FUEL ENGINE.

SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED AS THE REPLACEMENT FOR THE SIX YEAR OLD CORPORAL, THE SERGEANT HAS GREATER MOBILITY, CAN BE MORE EASILY STORED AND PUT INTO ACTION MORE QUICKLY, WITH EITHER CONVENTIONAL OR NUCLEAR WARHEADS, THAN MANY OTHER WEAPONS SYSTEMS.

AN ADDED ADVANTAGE IS THAT THE SERGEANT CAN BE CARRIED TO A BATTLE AREA BY AIRCRAFT OR HELICOPTER AND CAN BE FIRED IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS AND IN ANY TERRAIN BY A RELATIVELY SMALL CREW.

THERE'S NO INDICATION AS TO HOW MANY SERGEANT MISSILES WILL BE SUPPLIED TO THE BUNDESWEHR, WHICH PLACED AN INITIAL ORDER FOR A SMALL NUMBER FOR MILITARY EVALUATION PURPOSES IN 1961.
