    Five thousand people employed at the Common Market head-quarters in Brussels staged a warning strike on Tuesday (21 March) to back their demands for a change in the method. of calculating their wage increases.

    The employees -- known collectively as Eurocrats -- want a mechanism for reviewing salaries every six months.

    The strikers picketed a meeting of the EEC Council of Ministers at which their wage demands were being discussed. However, it is understood that the ministers were unable to agree on a formula.

    (Wages for the eurocrats wasn't the only issue to cause disagreement at Tuesday's Brussels meeting. A clash between the French and West German Agricultural ministers ended with the abrupt departure of the West German for Bonn for urgent talks with his Chancellor. The two ministers disagreed over a french proposal for a time limit for compensation to be paid to German farmers for loss of earnings caused by the upward revaluation of the mark.)
    SYNOPSIS: Employees at the Common Market head-quarters in Brussels picketed a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday to back their demands for a change in the method of calculating wage increases. Discontent over wages has led to a number of token strikes by the employees in recent weeks. Tuesday's strike was in support of their efforts to secure a system which would review their salaries every six months.

    Police stood by at the headquarters -- but there was no trouble. The employees -- known as Eurocrats -- times their protest strike to coincide with a ministerial meeting at which their demands were being discussed. However, it's understood the ministers failed to reach agreement. The Brussels meeting was held under the chairmanship of Common Market President Mansholt.
