  • Description

Police arrested a young Black Muslim "enforcer" early Friday (26 February) and charged him with the murder of Malcolm X.

Officers described the man, 26-year-old Norman 3X Butler, of New York City, as a "muscleman" used to enforce discipline among his fellow Black Muslims.

Butler was limping as he strode into police headquarters and had a bandage on his right ankle. The limp was not immediately explained, but the assassination of Malcolm by three to five men triggered a melee of slugging and shooting.

Butler is the second man arrested in the assassination. The first suspect, wounded by Malcolm's bodyguard, was rescued by police from Malcolm's followers immediately after the shooting. The shooting took place last Sunday as Malcolm spoke to a meeting of his black nationalist sect, a group he organised after he broke away from the Black Muslims.

Police said Butler had been free on bail in the shooting last month of a former Muslim who was trying to set up his own mosque.
