  • Description

President Nixon has again declared that he will not resign. One Thursday (November 15th) he told a meeting of estate agents at a Washington hotel that despite the calls for his resignation that had come from critics and friends, he would not quit.

The audience applauded throughout his thirty-minute speech and gave him standing ovations as he arrived and departed.

The speech came only hours after another in the series of white House meetings that the President has been having this week with Republican members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The President has been trying to convince them that he was not guilty of any law breaking during the 1972 presidential campaign.

Mr. Nixon has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks to resign, and there have also been calls for his impeachment. At every opportunity he has rejected these demands and asserted his innocence of any wrong-doing. Most of his speech to the estate agents was devoted to recounting his accomplishments of the past year. He noted that not only had the war in Indochina ended and the prisoners returned home but progress has been made in improving U.S. ties with Peking and Moscow.

Presidential staff have suggested that he should make a variety of public appearances, both personal and on television, to boost his public image which is now at an all-time low.
