  • Description

The world's largest jet cargo aircraft, a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter is up for the world weight dropping record after successfully parachuting 70,195 pounds over the Southern California desert at El Centro. Officials of the National Aeronautics Assn. will request the Federation Aeronautique Internationale to establish a new category for heavy cargo paradrops. The airforce's new four-engine fanjet cargo carrier drops a seven pallets weighing 10,000 pounds apiece within thirty seconds. Three one-hundred foot diameter parachute on each pallet lowered the payload to the ground without damage within a half-mile area. The Starlifter was flying at a speed of 170 mph-during the drop. The C-141 will eventually paradrop cargo while flying at 230 mph. The 70,195 pound drop is equal to the combined weight of ten 106mm howitzers--the type of equipment, along with rations, ammunition and fuel, the C-141 will carry and drop on future missions.
