Background: Some of the finest vintage cars in the world are competing in a unique Monte Carlo motor rally.

The Monte-Carol Rally for vintage cars is the first event of its type in the world. It has attracted entries from all over Europe and from both North and South America.

Regulations covering the run are based on those of the legendary Monte-Carlo Rally. However, the event is restricted to cars manufactured between 1923 and 1939.

The Rally, to run from Monday (1 July) to the 7th July, follows the traditional routes to Monte Carlo with eighteen starting points around Europe and New York.

The Automobile Club of Monaco organised the Rally to mark the 25th. anniversary of the accession of Price Rainier.

European starting points included Athens, Greece, where 12 gleaming machines faced the starter, among them Bugattis, a Hotchkiss, Fiat, Hispanoa-Suiza, Mercedes and Rolls Royce. Drivers came from France, Italy, Great Britain and Greece.

SYNOPSIS: The Acropolia provided a fitting backdrop as twelve of the world's finest vintage vehicles assembled in Athens for the start of a unique motoring event on Monday. The vehiclas were part of a two-hundred strong field competing in the Monte-Carlo Rally for Vintage Cars. The first event of its type in the world, it was organised by the Automobile Club of Monaco to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the accession of Prince Rainier.

Drivers from France, Italy, Great Britain, United States and Greece dressed for the occasion before setting out from New York and eightee European starting points. First away in Athens was a Bugatti sports.

Bugattis were prominent in the entry for the event, run under the same regulations and along the traditional routes of the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. the organisers said they hoped the event would "recapture the atmosphere and excitement of the golden years of motoring."
The rules restricted entry to cars manufactured between nineteen twenty-three and nineteen thirty nine -- suc as this pampered Mercedes 540-K.

Despite their age, all entrants, including this Hotchkiss will be required to maintain average speeds of between about twenty and thirty miles per hour.

This Hispanoa-Suiza H-613 started well on its journey of about eighteen hundred miles to Monte Carlo.

Names more familiar fort those not too well acquainted with vintage machines included this Fiat Fifteen-Hundred.

And, of course, Rolls Royce in the impressive shape of a Phantom One. Al routes will converge on Anncoy in the French Alps for the final stage of the Rally to Monte Carlo on July seventh.
