    The People's Republic of China opened an Embassy in Tokyo on Thursday (1 February) on the premises of an hotel.

    The opening followed the arrival on Wednesday (31 January) of a team of diplomats headed by Peking's new Charge d'Affaires to Japan, Mr. Mi Kuo-chun. Mr. Mi, who is 56, was a Deputy Director of the National Science Commission and technical adviser to the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. A graduate of a Japanese technology college, he served as Commercial Representative in Austria from 1967 to 1968.

    Japan and The People's Republic of China decided last September to establish diplomatic relations. The Japanese embassy in Peking opened for business on January 11.

    SYNOPSIS: At Tokyo airport on Wednesday, Japanese officials gathered to welcome a new envoy from The People's Republic of China.

    Mr. Mi Kuo-chun was appointed as Charge d'Affaires at Peking's new embassy in Tokyo. Mr. Mi had been to Japan before and had previous diplomatic experience in Austria. He was a deputy Director of China's National Science Commission and a technical adviser to the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

    The day after his arrival, The People's Republic opened its new embassy in temporary quarters at a hotel in Tokyo.

    Japan and China agreed last September to establish diplomatic relations... and Japan's embassy in Peking opened for business on January the 11th.
